During routine duties of searching vehicles at the Vioolsdrift Port of Entry on Saturday, 24 February 2024 at approximately 00:15, a taxi entering the RSA from the Namibian side, en-route to Cape Town, was stopped and searched. Before searching the taxi, the driver jumped out and fled the scene, leaving the assistant driver and 7 passengers in the vehicle. Upon further searching the vehicle, police members discovered 3 firearms concealed in a plastic bag, beneath the driver’s seat. The assistant driver and the 7 passengers were arrested and detained. The Police launched a man hunt for the driver.

Vioolsdrift SAPS are investigating a case of illegal possession of firearms. The suspects are expected to appear in the Springbok Magistrates court soon.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, indicated that efforts will be intensified at the ports of entry in an attempt to prevent the entry of illegal firearms at the borders entering the RSA.
