The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola welcomed the life long prison sentence handed down to Gladwin Steenkamp for the murder of an 8-year-old boy on 30 November 2022 in Kenhardt.
The accused was sentenced in the High Court in Upington on 13 October 2023.
The convicted murderer on 29 November 2022 assaulted his girlfriend and after she and her mother went to register a case of assault at the police station the next day, the accused went to the house of his girlfriend and took her eight year old brother and murdered him by gruesomely slitting the boy’s throat.
He then covered the boy in a duvet where the boy’s mother later found him hidden under a bed.
The meticulous investigation by Detective Warrant Officer, Elrich Mienies of Kenhardt SAPS led to the conviction of Gladwin Steenkamp who received a lifelong sentence.
He also received an additional sentence of 14 years for the assault of his girlfriend.
The NPA State Prosecutor, Advocate Tercheen Engelbrecht also played an integral part in securing this outstanding prosecution.
