The Northern Cape Police Management thrilled by the excellent partnership demonstrated by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Department of Justice in partnership with the South African Police Service, after a 73 year old man was sentenced to imprisonment for raping an 11 year old girl, in Gamokatedi village near Kuruman.

During the court proceedings in the Kuruman Regional Court, it came to light that the old man had attempted to rape the victim once and raped her twice between November and December 2014.

The old man would storm into the victim’s bedroom during the night, while the victim was asleep and rape her. He threatened to kill or hurt her should she scream or tell any person about the rape incidents.

In another incident the old man forced the victim to accompany him to the veld to collect wood and raped her in the veld. On the third occasion the old man attempted to rape the victim, however his attempts were unsuccessful. He was immediately arrested after the girl reported this rape incidents to her mother, who alerted the police.

The victim’s testimony and forensic evidence linked the accused to the crimes of rape and attempted rape that he was charged for. On Thursday, 21 November 2019 the man was found guilty and sentenced by the Kuruman Regional Court.

He was sentenced as follows, Count 1 Rape, 5 years imprisonment, Count 2, 15 year imprisonment and Count 3 Attempted rape, 8 year imprisonment.

The sentences were ordered to run concurrently. The man’s name will be included in the sex offenders register. He was also declared unfit to possess the firearm.
