23 year sentence for violent assault, rape and murder, Campbell

The SAPS Northern Cape Management has welcomed the sentence and lauded the sterling investigative efforts displayed by Sergeant Mandisa Son that resulted in the sentencing of 23 year old Nico Boom to a total of 23 years imprisonment for Assault with intent to cause bodily grievous harm, rape and murder of 32 year old woman.

It was on 9 February 2013 when a female body was discovered in a veld in Campbell. The meticulous investigation conducted by Sergeant Mandisa Son led to the arrest of Boom who was then a 15 year old minor. Boom confessed to perpetrating the crime together with three more suspects.

He later denied the confession and the three accused were acquitted.

On 15 November 2018 Boom was found guilty on six charges for which he was sentenced as follows:
• Three years for Assault GBH, four years
• Four years for being an accomplice
• Six years for rape and
• Ten years for murder.

The sentences will run concurrently and the investigating officer was applauded for her tireless efforts in ensuring that those who transgress the law, especially crimes committed against women and children, face the full might of the law.
