On 4 August 2020, the Upington Regional Court sentenced a 25-year-old man to 18 years imprisonment for raping his eleven-year-old sister.

According to the information, the accused raped his sister at their residential place on 29 November 2017 and threaten to kill her if she told anyone. However, on 18 August 2018, the victim got the courage and told her mother what had happened. The matter was reported to the police and suspect was arrested on the same day.

Bail was successfully opposed by the investigating officer, Sergeant Lucky Malepe and the suspect remained in custody for the duration of the trial. He was convicted and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm. His name will also be entered into the National Sexual Offences Register.

The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Brigadier Nicky Mills applauded the investigating officer for a meticulous investigation that ensured that justice prevails and that the girl will now be safe with the perpetrator out of her life.
