In a bid to bring down the levels of crime, police in Brits arrested a suspect who subsequently appeared in court on Friday, 8 February 2019. A 21 year old suspect was arrested within a few hours after allegedly committing a house robbery and rape in Zoutpansdrift near Brits on Wednesday 6 February 2018.

A 41 year old woman was cleaning her house at about 09:00 when the suspect entered and overpowered her. The suspect allegedly threatened the victim with a knife, assaulted and tied her up with shoelaces before raping her. The suspect then fled the scene with the victim’s cellular phone and a radio.

The victim managed to walk to a nearby road, where she was assisted by security officials who were on patrol.

Through information received from members of the community, the police arrested the suspect at his house at about 19:00 and recovered the stolen cellphone. Upon appearance in the Brits Magistrate’s’ Court on Friday, 8 February 2019, for house robbery and rape, Kabang Malatjie (21) was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Friday, 15 February 2019.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane lauded the police for their efforts in ensuring apprehension of the suspect. She also thanked members of the community for coming forward with information that led to the arrest of the suspect.
