A 73 year old women was walking home after visiting a family member in Motswedi village near Zeerust on Wednesday, 1 August 2018, at about 20:00 when she was allegedly grabbed from behind. She was accosted and allegedly raped by a 44 year old suspect.
The victim reported the incident to the police the next morning and the suspect was arrested shortly after the report was made. The suspect is expected to appear in the Lehurutshe Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 6 August 2018 facing a charge of rape.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane condemned the incident and lauded the police for their swift reaction that led to apprehension of the culprit. She urged members of the community to protect those who are vulnerable such as children and elderly.
