The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane condemned in the strongest possible terms an act of vigilantism that occurred at approximately 13:00 in Gopane village near Zeerust today, 16 March 2018.

According to information at our disposal, at around 06:00, a 75 year old woman was found with a wound on the head inside her house in Gopane village. The police were then summoned to the scene and while at the scene, they got a report that members of the community forced a man they suspected to be responsible for the murder of the old woman to a tree where they hung him.

At this stage, two cases of murder have been opened for investigation.

The Provincial Commissioner condemned the incident and indicated that members of the community must refrain from taking the law into their own hands as that will not be tolerated. “We are making an appeal to members of the community to work together with the police to ensure that criminals are arrested,” said the Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane.
