LICHTENBURG, North West — A veteran police officer, Warrant Officer Ennice Nortman, was crushed to death in a shocking parking area attack at Lichtenburg Mall in the North West province of South Africa on Monday, after a driver deliberately accelerated through a pedestrian crossing.
The 53-year-old warrant officer had reportedly warned the driver of a BMW SUV that she was about to use the crosswalk. Footage of the incident clearly shows the officer signaling her intent to cross. However, instead of braking, the driver accelerated and struck her, crushing her beneath the vehicle.
Police have confirmed that a suspect, identified as Akilesh Gupta, has been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged murder. In addition to the murder charge, authorities are actively investigating possible immigration offenses related to the suspect.
A video of the fatal encounter surfaced online yesterday, quickly drawing public attention. Law enforcement officials are urgently appealing to the public to refrain from sharing the footage on social media, as the video remains a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Warrant Officer Ennice Nortman was a highly experienced and dedicated member of the force, having served in the police service for more than 30 years.
