Two male suspects are scheduled to appear before the Zeerust Magistrate’s Court today, facing a series of serious charges including two counts of murder, five of attempted murder, and one count of defeating the ends of justice.

The suspects, aged 29 and 33, were arrested and detained after they voluntarily handed themselves over to the police. During the arrest, law enforcement officials confiscated a 9mm pistol, a magazine, and five rounds of ammunition from the suspects.

The charges stem from a violent shooting incident that occurred in the early hours of Friday, September 12, 2025. According to police reports, officers were on a routine patrol when they were alerted to the shooting at approximately 03:30.

Upon arrival at the scene on the R49 (Gaborone/Zeerust) road near Mokgola village, they discovered a grey Ford Ranger. Inside the vehicle, two male victims were found with fatal gunshot wounds. Three other passengers—two females and one male—were seriously injured in the attack. Two additional passengers are reported to have survived the incident.

While the motive for the shooting remains unknown at this stage, police have indicated that the possibility of a connection to illegal mining activities in Mmasebudule village outside Zeerust cannot be ruled out.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
