In a continuous effort to curb illegal proliferation of firearms, Tsebiso Matshela (23) appeared in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on 21 May 2020, for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition as well as possession of gold nuggets. He was remanded in custody until Thursday, 27 May 2020 for a formal bail application.

Matshela was apprehended on Tuesday, 19 May 2020, at about 12:30 in Extension 4, Kanana near Orkney. That was after police operationalised information which led them to the accused’s rented room where a search was conducted. During the search, a pistol, two magazines, ammunition, a substantial amount of cash and gold nuggets with an estimated street value of R320 000-00 were found.

Furthermore, 41-year-old Elliot Mojakisane was also arrested on the scene after he tried to bribe the police. It is alleged that the police were still conducting the search when Mojakisane arrived. He allegedly offered the police R3 500-00 in order to release Matshela.

The accused was arrested immediately for bribery after handing the money over to the police. Consequently, Mojakisane also appeared in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court for bribery.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded the police for their prompt reaction and diligence that led to the arrests and seizures. He said that the successes will also send a clear message that although there are few unethical police officers, the majority of our members are professional, respect the rule of law and act in a manner that is honest and accountable.
