NORTH WEST — A tragic shack fire has claimed the lives of twin infants in Ikageng, leaving their parents hospitalized with severe burn injuries after a devastating blaze swept through the Hashtag informal settlement.

Ikageng police spokespersons confirmed that emergency units were dispatched to the scene, located close to Potchefstroom, just before midnight on Monday, 6 July 2026, following reports of the fire. Upon arrival, first responders found that the informal dwelling had already been completely destroyed by the flames.

Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) officials reported that the occupants of the shack—an adult male and his wife—sustained significant burn injuries. The couple was treated at the scene by EMRS personnel before being transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment.

Tragically, while processing the aftermath of the destroyed structure, authorities discovered the charred remains of the couple’s four-month-old twin boys among the debris.

Representatives from the JB Marks Fire Brigade successfully extinguished the blaze. Ikageng police have opened an inquest into the incident. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage and forms a central part of the ongoing police investigation.
