Three alleged robbers are in hospital under police guard after their getaway vehicle overturned in Letlhabile near Brits, North West police said on Sunday.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the three were trying to escape from police when their bakkie overturned on Saturday.

“The suspects were arrested in the early hours of Saturday in Letlhabile near Brits. They were arrested after the police promptly acted on a tip-off about suspected illegal activity at Letlhabile complex. According to information, the police were approaching the complex when the suspects drove off…,” he said.

Police pursued one of the vehicles, a Toyota Hilux bakkie fitted with a blue light. The driver of the bakkie lost control and it overturned.

“That led to the arrest of three suspects who were all injured and are currently under police guard at a hospital. The police found two generators and two drilling jack machines inside the bakkie. The police also found the second car, a red Volkswagen Golf that the suspects abandoned due to breakdown. Upon searching it, a substantial amount of cash that was allegedly taken from [an] Automated Teller Machine [ATM] was found inside.”

The three men, aged between 25 and 41, were expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court soon after being discharged from hospital.

They would be charged with business robbery, malicious damage to property, theft, and possession of housebreaking implements.
