KLERKSDORP – A major Klerksdorp illegal mining crackdown has resulted in the arrest of ten suspects following a highly coordinated, multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation. Members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, operating alongside the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Jouberton SAPS, apprehended the individuals—ranging in age from 16 to 47—on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, over allegations of illicit gold processing and unlawful possession.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, the targeted operation was initiated after the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation received actionable intelligence regarding unauthorized gold processing activities on a specific plot in Klerksdorp. Sources indicated that heavy vehicles transporting suspected gold-bearing material were repeatedly observed entering the property to facilitate the illicit operation.
Acting swiftly on this intelligence, the joint tactical team deployed to the location. Upon arrival, officers discovered the ten suspects on the premises, which was configured to resemble a working farm. When law enforcement approached, the suspects attempted to flee the scene but were rapidly cornered and detained by the responding officers.
A thorough search of the property yielded significant evidence. Authorities successfully confiscated multiple bags containing gold-bearing material, an array of specialized mining equipment, and two vehicles believed to be instrumental in the illegal operation.
The apprehended individuals are slated for an imminent appearance at the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court. Once before the bench, they will formally face charges of illegal mining, unlawful possession of gold, and contravention of the Immigration Act.
