Student in Brits court for robbery

A 20-year-old student arrested for allegedly stabbing another man and stealing his wrist watch was granted R1,000 bail by the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

David Molotsi of Oukasie near Brits allegedly stabbed the complainant with a knife in Majakaneng south of Brits on August 10 and took his wrist watch valued at R300.

The court heard that he allegedly committed the crime while out on bail on a charge of murder. He is facing a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The court heard that he allegedly stabbed another man to death early this year.

In an affidavit read out in court, Molotsi said he was a student at Brits Technical College and had a child who depends on him for support.

He also buys medication for his deaf parents from the money he earns doing odd jobs.

He said he had been in custody since his arrest on August 12 and had not been able to provide for his parents and his child, and that his studies suffered.

Magistrate Moses Maswanganyi ordered that he report to the Brits police station every day and that he must not make any contact with the complainant.

His case was postponed to November 30 to allow further time for investigation.
