The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena warns the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. This after a video went viral on various social media platforms in connection with a severe assault of a stark-naked man with a sjambok and bricks in Taung.

Subsequent to becoming aware of the incident which occurred on Saturday, 20 June 2020 in Lokaleng village, police traced the accused who handed himself over on Sunday, 21 June 2020. The accused, Vuyisile Godhlo, aged 47, appeared in the Taung Magistrates’ Court on 23 June 2020, for attempted murder.

He was remanded in custody until 24 June 2020, for formal bail application. At the time of the arrest, the accused was on warning and due to appear in court on Tuesday, 21 July 2020 after he allegedly assaulted another man last month in Lokaleng village the same way he assaulted the latest victim.

The victim in the latest incident who is allegedly accused of stock theft, is currently admitted to hospital.

The Provincial Commissioner expressed his disapproval of the incident and indicated that taking the law into one’s hands is illegal and cannot be tolerated. In addition, he urged the public to report criminal acts to the police and to work with relevant community structures such as Community Police Forum (CPF) in the fight against crime rather than taking the law into their own hands.
