Kenneth Baloyi (31), John Khumba (23), Paulos Macuvele (44) and a 17-year old male were arrested on Friday, 2 September 2022, by the Illicit Mining Task Team, for suspected illegal mining in Stilfontein.

It is alleged that on Friday morning, 2 September 2022, at about 11:50, police held an operation and observed a group of men who were busy with illegal mining activities.

Upon being approached by the police, the group ran away. However, four males were apprehended.

They appeared in the Stilfontein Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 5 September 2022, and were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on Monday, 12 September 2022.

The 17-year-old was processed in accordance with the Child Justice Act, 2008 (Act No. 75 of 2008).

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena pointed out illegal mining is a National Priority and that the police are relentless to ensure that those involved are brought to book.
