Sixteen people were injured when two minibus taxis collided on the N12 about 30km from Potchefstroom in North West on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

Paramedics from ER24 and other services that arrived on the scene found two people with critical injuries, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

“Both the occupants were found trapped inside one of the vehicles. The local fire department had to use the jaws-of-life to free them from the wreckage. One of the critically injured patients had to be placed on life support.”

Fourteen other people sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious. All the patients were transported to Potchefstroom Provincial Hospital for further medical care. The cause of the collision was not yet known, Vermaak said.
