Six suspects appeared before the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on 31 July 2019, for allegedly dealing in drugs and unlawful possession of ammunition (Firearms Control Act: Act 60 of 2000).

This court appearance emanates after members of Provincial Organised Crime and the Klerksdorp Technical Response Team (TRT) acted on information received. A search warrant was obtained and the identified houses in Khuma, near Orkney, was searched on Monday, 29 July 2019.

547 Mandrax tablets to the estimated street value of R30 085.00 as well as ammunition (several 38 special bullets) were found during the search. The police also seized cash, a Nissan Micra and seven cellular phones.

Mthobisi Hlongwane (24); Mzwakhe Hlongwane (27); Cebo Mazibuko (20); Ndumiso Khumalo (19); Nhlakanipho Khumalo (25) and Mpendulo Shabalala (21) were remanded in custody and will re-appear for their second court appearance on Monday, 19 August 2019.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen Ryno Naidoo applauded the members for their dedication in making sure that criminals and drugs are removed from society. He said: “Police need the community to speak out in order to prevent, combat and investigate crime. By doing so, we will build safer communities.”
