The Provincial management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West applauded Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units (FCS) for working hard to secure a combined eight life terms and 432 years imprisonment sentences between October and 12 December 2017.

The sentences were handed down to 46 accused after Sterling investigative work by different FCS units in the province.

The accused were sentenced on 44 various rape and robbery cases.

The accused‘s ages range between 16 and 57, while the victims were aged between four and 55 when the incidents occurred. The incidents were reported between September 2006 and February 2017 at various places in the province including Ganyesa, Orkney, Khuma, Jouberton, Mahikeng, Letlhabile, Mogwase, Hartbeesfontein, Lichtenburg, Ottosdal, and many others.

In one of the cases, a 30 year old Monyane Nono was sentenced to life imprisonment in November 2017 for raping a 29 year old woman in 3 April 2015. It was reported at the time of the incident that the accused was sitting with friends in Orkney when he asked the woman to accompany him to buy more beers. He then drove to a dumping site where he raped the woman.

In another unrelated incident in Letlhabile, Mashaba Alexander Jason, 26, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday, 12 October 2017 for raping a 51 year old woman. It was disclosed in court that the victim was asleep on 26 November 2011 when the accused woke her up and threatened her with a knife. The accused then raped the victim before robbing her of her cell phone and cash. It was reported that the accused then locked the victim inside the house and left with the key.

The North West Provincial Commissioner; Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane extended her appreciation to all FCS Unit members and to the various role players including prosecution for their dedication as well as members of the community for their cooperation that resulted in the convictions.

She said that the sentences will send a strong message that nothing will prevent the police from ensuring that criminals are brought to book and prosecuted.
