Savage stoning, stabbing, 4 gangsters get life imprisonment

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane welcomed a life imprisonment sentence imposed against four Khuma gangsters by Stilfontein Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 28 May 2018.

Thembinkosi Rens (27), Happy Molonto (23), Thabang Motloung (23) and Lehlohonolo Nkhi (26) were sentenced following an incident in which they stabbed, stoned and assaulted to death a member of a rival gang in the evening on Saturday, 03 September 2016 at Extension 9 Khuma location.

It was disclosed during the proceedings that members of a group known as Alaska chased and surrounded members of a rival gang called SVK.

In a fight that ensued among members of the two gangs, Piet Olekeng Modiri (26), was stabbed, stoned and assaulted. Upon realising what was happening, Modiri’s mother tried to protect hers son, but was also stoned and sustained serious injuries.

The incident was reported to the police who registered cases for investigation. The accused were successfully traced and arrested the following day. During the arrest, clothes and blood stained knives that were used during the horrific incident were seized.

The court thanked the police for the hard work and also sentenced the fifth accused, Thabang Tshabalala (19) who was a juvenile when the crimes were committed to 12 years imprisonment for murder and 6 years for assault GBH.

The Provincial Commissioner pointed out that gangsterism is one of the challenges that need a concerted effort of various sectors of the community to ensure that it is dealt with successfully. “We are positive that the sentence will definitely send a clear message that gangsterism and related offences will not be tolerated,” said Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane.
