NORTH WEST – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has successfully executed an intelligence-driven operation in Mothotlung, resulting in the arrest of a 59-year-old suspect and the seizure of multiple illegal firearms and live ammunition. This coordinated law enforcement action targets individuals allegedly terrorizing local communities and reinforces ongoing efforts to combat gun violence in the North West province.

Acting on credible intelligence regarding suspects believed to be in possession of illegal weapons and intimidating residents, SAPS officials from the Mothotlung police station, supported by Brits Crime Intelligence and the Brits Tactical Response Team (TRT), launched the operation on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.

The investigation directed law enforcement to Extension 2 in Mothotlung, where officers intercepted and searched a bakkie driven by the suspect. During the vehicle search, authorities discovered a 9mm CZ pistol and 15 rounds of live ammunition. Because the suspect failed to produce a valid firearm license, he was immediately taken into custody.

Subsequently, police proceeded to the suspect’s residential address in Mothotlung. A thorough search of the premises yielded an additional cache of weapons, including two pistols, one rifle, one shotgun, and various rounds of live ammunition comprising both rifle and handgun calibers.

A SAPS spokesperson confirmed that further investigations are actively underway to establish the lawful ownership of the seized firearms and ammunition, as well as to determine any potential links to broader criminal activities in the region.

The 59-year-old suspect has been formally charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in terms of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000). He remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
