As part of reasserting the authority of the state, Operation Fiela II was launched in the province by the MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Dr Motlhabane on Friday, 02 February 2018 in Klerksdorp.

The launch was attended by the Executive Mayor of Matlosana City Local Municipality, Councillor Kgaile.

The operation is aimed at maintaining law, order, peace, security and stability as well as to reclaim the space or areas controlled by criminals and to create a conducive environment for all people in South Africa to participate in social and economic activities.

The operation was launched through a multi disciplinary parade formed by various joint law enforcement role players including provincial and local government structures. In her welcome address, the North West Provincial Commissioner indicated that the operation commenced just after the end of Operation Back to Basics: Safer Festive Season and that it will continue until the end of July 2018.

Upon delivering his address, the MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Dr Mpho Motlhabane said that it is the responsibility of all role players to ensure that the authority of the state is reasserted through integrated operational plans focusing on the six pillar approach that amongst others includes communication mobilisation and social services, safety and security, and Legal and regulatory framework.

The MEC also handed a mobile Community Service Center (CSC) to the Cluster Commander of Klerksdorp, Major General Pretorius. The CSC will be used to take policing services to the remote areas within the cluster.

The operation’s mainly crime intelligence driven actions that started in the early hours, led to the arrest of four suspects for drug related crimes and three for illicit mining.

Another 26 suspects were brought to book for various offences during a suspect raiding that preceded the operation.
During a roadblock that was held along Klerksdorp-Ventersdorp road, 190 vehicles were stopped and searched while 18 traffic fines worth R20 900 were issued to motorists. Four Second-Hand Goods businesses were closed for operating without licences while one shebeen was also shut down. A total of 30 undocumented persons were taken in for processing.

The operation also led to confiscation of various drugs, suspected stolen property including three cell phones, 821 tyres, 243 mag rims, spades as well as cash.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane indicated that the operation will continue at other parts of the province to stamp the authority of the state and ensure that members of the community are and feel safe.
