R1.3 million worth of illegal cigarettes recovered, Potchefstroom

Two suspects were arrested by police, after they were found in possession of illegal cigarettes in Auto Lane, Potchefstroom, on Tuesday, 1 February 2022 at about 15:00.

The police received a tip-off about a suspicious Isuzu truck in central town and they responded swiftly.

The truck was spotted and police searched it. They found numerous boxes hidden at the back of the truck. Inside the boxes, illegal cigarettes with an estimated street value of R1.3 million were discovered.

The truck driver, Isaac Kamkula (44) and his assistant, Andrew Nkusa (42), were immediately arrested and they made a brief appearance before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 2 February 2022 on a charge of possession of illicit cigarettes.

The duo have been remanded in custody until Tuesday, 8 February 2022, for formal bail application.
