A private security company had to fire rubber bullets during a protest outside the Glencore mine in Marikana.

The protest took place outside the Wonderkop smelter which is part of the Glencore mine near Rustenburg.

Residents of the Wonderkop community are demanding that the mine employs them and during the protest security staff were assaulted and thrown with stones.

Threats to set trucks alight have required that staff fire rubber bullets.

Eight people were injured in the protest action.
