During the last two days’ illicit strike, health-care workers at Potchefstroom hospital caused chaos and severely disrupted services.

Garbage was strewn in the corridors and on the premises after the illicit strikers gained entry to the hospital and surrounding terrain.

The strikers claim, among other things, that they are entitled to performance bonuses for the services they rendered during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The FF Plus engaged with Mr Madoda Sambatha, the MEC for Health in the North West, and demanded that firm action must be taken against the strikers.

Health-care workers with feigned grievances and self-serving demands may not be allowed to jeopardise the health of patients with their unlawful behaviour.

A hospital ought to be a safe haven in a clinical environment where patients’ interests come first. These strikers are a blemish on the reputation of all health-care workers in the government sector.

The FF Plus will continue to apply pressure to ensure that the Department of Health enforces all relevant labour and other legislation to its full extent to prevent this incident from repeating itself.
