Dumisani Nene (37) who appeared before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on 4 July 2019, in connection with attempted murder of an Ikageng police officer was remanded in custody until Monday 8 July 2019, for formal bail application.

Nene’s court appearance came after he allegedly stabbed a 33 year old Sergeant with a knife at Extension 11 in Ikageng outside Potchefstroom on Friday, 28 July 2019.

It is alleged that the police officer was arresting the suspect for case of theft which was allegedly committed beginning of June 2019. According to information available at this stage, the suspect resisted the arrest and stabbed the police officer twice with a knife and fled the scene.

The police officer was rushed to hospital where he was treated. Following a manhunt that was launched, the suspect was ultimately arrested in Ikageng on Tuesday 2 July 2019.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane condemned the attack and applauded the police in Ikageng for their swift reaction that led to the arrest of the suspect. She said that no extent of attacks will deter the police from doing their work of ensuring that members of the community are and feel safe.
