As part of curbing illegal proliferation of firearms and to ensure that those who commit crime are dealt with effectively, Nelson Malati, 34 and Bongani Ndebele, 31, were remanded in custody when they appeared in the Brits Magistrates Court on Thursday, 17 October 2019, for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The pair’s court appearance stems from their apprehension during the operation by the Brits Trio Task Team and Hartbeespoort Dam Detectives. It is alleged that the police searched the accused who were hitch-hiking on the R104 road. During the search, the accused were found in possession unlicensed .38 Special pistol and a silver 9mm Star pistol respectively. They were also found in possession of ammunition.

As a result, the accused were arrested after failing to account for the possession of the two firearms and ammunition. Investigation into the matter is underway and the accused will reappear before the court on Tuesday, 29 October 2019.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, commended the team for their vigilance that led to the arrest of the accused and seizure of the firearms and ammunition which are used to commit violent crimes.
