'Operation Fiela 2' nets 881 suspects

The police in the province nabbed 881 suspects during Operation Fiela 2 Reclaim and Safer Festive Season operation in various parts of the province between Friday, 1 and Sunday, 3 December 2017.

Of the arrested suspects, 463 were busted during Operation Fiela 2 which is aimed at asserting the authority of the state and executed through integrated operations by the police together with role players including provincial and local municipal traffic officials as well as immigration officials.

The suspects were arrested for various offences such as rape, assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), possession of drugs, drunken driving as well as different liquor and traffic related offences. During the operation, six suspected illegal foreign nationals were taken in for processing by immigration officials.

It was during the operation that goods such as dagga, liquor and dangerous weapons were confiscated.

The other 418 suspects were arrested in the same period through an ongoing Operation Back to Basics: Safer Festive Season 2017/2018 operations that began in October 2017 when the operation was officially launched to ensure that all people are and feel safe in their localities.

The operations are conducted to intensify police work done throughout the year.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane commended the members throughout the province for their commitment of ensuring the safety and security of the community within the province.
