NWK from Lichtenburg donated a cash amount of R25 000 in support of Agri NW’s rural safety initiatives in North West. No less than five agricultural producers died as a result of farm attacks in North West over the past three months.

‘Names like BC Greyling (Sannieshof), Hanno Steyn (Lichtenburg), Patrick Itumeng (Vryburg), Elsa Erasmus (Schweizer-Reneke) or Dries Botha (Brits) may not be of any significance to the general public, but to us in agriculture these are the names of producers, spouses, or someone’s mother, father, neighbour or employer, who was murdered in cold blood in North West in the past 12 weeks,’ Heinrich Krüger, chairperson of NWK, commented in reaction to the news about Dries Botha (58), who died of gunshot wounds after he had been overpowered on his farm outside Brits last Tuesday.

According to Boeta du Toit, chief executive officer of Agri NW, the donation received from NWK will be applied directly for rural safety initiatives and in the interests of producers in North West.

NWK has been active in fundraising projects in aid of the Agri Securitas Trust Fund since 2008. The latter trust is part of the Agri SA group and strives to promote rural safety across South Africa. Among other things, NWK is involved as sponsor for an annual fundraising event at the Agri SA annual congress, as well as for a golf day in aid of the trust fund. This golf day will again take place in Parys in October this year.
