A farmer from North West is in a critical condition in hospital after he was attacked by six suspects on his farm outside Brits.

Dries Botha (58) had to undergo an emergency operation on Tuesday night after being shot three times. The doctors had to remove a bullet that was lodged in his pancreas and attend to a shot wound on his shoulder and hand.

Apparently, Dries and his wife were at home on their farm in Kleinfontein area. Around 20:00 Dries went outside the house to activate an alarm when the suspects fired five shots at him. Dries tried to fight back, but the six suspects armed with guns killed him.

During this time, Botha’s wife locked herself inside and alerted the police and community security. Fortunately, the suspects fled without harming her and at this stage, there are no reports about stolen items.

The police and community security swiftly responded and transferred Dries to the hospital.

The police are investigating the incident, and at this stage, no arrests have been made.

According to the police, several other farm attacks have occurred in that vicinity.
