On 22 February 2018, a 30 year old woman was remanded in custody until Thursday, 1 March 2018 after appearing in the Zeerust Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder.

The suspect’s court appearance emanates from her arrest on Tuesday, 20 February 2018 for allegedly poisoning her one year old baby. According to the information available to the police at this stage, it appears that the mother was who struggling financially to take care of her baby, gave her a poison known as Galepirimi.

Upon realising that the baby was motionless, she allegedly called her mother. The grandmother and the baby was rushed to the local hospital, where she was declared dead.

The police were summoned after the mother allegedly disclosed that she poisoned the baby. A case of murder was ultimately opened and the mother was arrested.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane condemned the incident and urged members of the community to report their challenges to professionals like Social Workers to avoid situations like this one.
