MATSATSENG, North West — As local government elections approach, Matsatseng residents are demanding urgent development to address severe infrastructure deficits in their village. Located about 30 kilometres outside Mahikeng in the North West province, the community is grappling with a lack of basic services, prompting calls for immediate intervention from future local leaders.

For some community members, participating in the democratic process remains out of reach. A 25-year-old resident explained that voting is currently just a dream because she does not possess an identity document. She noted that her mother also lacked an ID, which created a bureaucratic barrier preventing her from obtaining one. Relying on a partner who does casual odd jobs for survival, she expressed deep envy toward those who are able to cast a ballot. Furthermore, she highlighted a generational administrative issue, revealing that her children do not have birth certificates and only possess clinic cards.

Beyond the electoral challenges, the daily living conditions in the village are dire. Another community spokesperson emphasized the desperate need for houses, electricity, and water. The lack of maintained infrastructure means that local roads become completely impassable during the rainy season, making it difficult to drive or even walk through the area.

The housing crisis is equally pressing, with many families forced to reside in makeshift shacks, some constructed entirely from wood. A local voter pointed out that these living conditions become entirely unbearable when it rains. While this resident intends to vote, they expressed cautious optimism, hoping that the upcoming elections will finally deliver the long-awaited transformation to their neighborhood.

Ultimately, while the community continues to lack fundamental services, the true measure of the upcoming local government elections will be whether the residents’ votes successfully translate into meaningful, tangible development for the area.
