A collaborative effort by the police and Customs officials at Kopfontein Port of Entry led to the arrest of a 28 year old suspect in the evening on Friday, 19 January 2018.

The suspect was arrested after the truck he was driving from South Africa to Botswana was searched at the Port of Entry. The search that was conducted by the Customs Detection Dog Unit that led to the discovery of various marine species including:

468 live crabs, of which 27 were found dead, 7 x 10kg of frozen squid, 20kg of red snappers, 20 kg box of prawns, 6 giant silver fish, 5kg of oysters, 5kg of Sea snails, 5kg of mussels and 20 kg of shrimps.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Zeerust Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 22 January 2018 on charges of Unlawful possession and exportation of marine products.

The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (DPCI) is investigating the case.
