Residents of Marikana are calling for the exhumation and reburial of approximately 80 unidentified bodies discovered in unmarked graves in the area. The Rustenburg Local Municipality has confirmed awareness of the graves, which came to light after a nearby mining company sought to relocate them.

Discovery of the Graves

The graves were uncovered last month following complaints of a foul smell emanating from the site. Authorities later confirmed that over 80 bodies, most marked as “unknown,” had been buried there. Only two graves bore partial names—one labeled Maria Unknown and another as Johannes Moni.

Municipality and Health Department Respond

The Rustenburg Local Municipality stated that the burials took place in May 2025 as part of a relocation process involving a mining company. Officials claim the reburials were conducted in the presence of environmental health practitioners and some families. However, residents remain skeptical, questioning why most graves remain unidentified if relatives were involved.

Meanwhile, the North West Department of Health has denied any connection to the bodies, clarifying that they were not linked to its facilities, including the Brits and Pankop forensic mortuaries.

Community Outrage and Demands

Local residents have expressed shock and anger over the discovery, demanding answers about the origins of the bodies and the legality of their reburial. A community member stated, “It’s a shock to see so many unidentified graves. We don’t know what’s really going on.”

A funeral undertaker, Majakaneng Funeral Services, claimed responsibility for the reburials, stating that the bodies were relocated from Elandskraal mining area, to this farm which was purchased by their company. They promised to provide permits and official documentation by Monday.

Ongoing Investigations

As authorities scramble to provide clarity, Marikana residents insist on transparency, fearing possible foul play or illegal burials. The municipality has pledged further engagement, but tensions remain high as the community awaits conclusive answers.
