The South African Police Service (SAPS) management in the province has noted with great concern a message doing the rounds on social media platforms by some individuals about an incident reported in Brits on Saturday evening, 18 February 2023, where an 11-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped in Maboloka Village near Letlhabile, outside Brits.

Subsequent to the report, the search for both the girl and the suspect was launched.

While the girl was found on Sunday morning, 19 February 2023, the suspect who also raped the minor, ran into the bushes after realising that the police were hot on his heels.

That after various police units including the air wing and mounted unit as well as various security companies and civil organisations participated in the search operation.

The police and family have been in very close contact and regular feedback is constantly provided.

The public is warned that no person is allowed to incite public violence by circulating false information of an alleged suspect, named Kagiso with his photograph, in any manner including publishing it.

This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and discouraged as it is likely to incite violence including mob justice attacks.

It must also be indicated that no amount of intimidation, lawlessness and brazen disrespect for the rule of law will distract the police from enforcing the law.

Anyone with information that can assist the police in the investigation is requested to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Boitumelo Rakabe of Brits Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) on 079 ‪‪881 9940.
