Police in the province noted with concern serious allegations made through various media sources regarding an incident in which Thato Motale was allegedly shot by the police on Thursday, 19 April 2018.

The death is not related to the protest that took place at that time. The incident occurred following a car chase that began at Unit 6, Mmabatho after the police were alerted about an armed robbery and spotted two vehicles that were used by the suspects.

During the car chase at Airport View along Bray road, police armoured vehicle that came as a backup collided with one of the suspects’ vehicle, a bakkie. The armoured vehicle overturned while avoiding collision with the suspects’ vehicle.

It was during the incident that Thato was fatally wounded.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is currently investigating a case of murder. Meanwhile, a case of armed robbery has been opened and it is still under investigation.

The incident is not linked to the protest as reported and circulated through social media platforms. It is only fair and proper for those who allege that Thato’s death is linked to the protest to avail themselves including at court so that both versions can be tested.
