The North West High Court sitting in Mokgwase has on Tuesday 12 February 2018, sentenced a 29 year old accused, Joseph Mashava, and the 28 year old Shimbuya Munjarazi, to double life imprisonment each for murder and rape.

The accused were further sentenced to 5 years for house breaking, 15 years for robbery with aggravated circumstances, 5 years for possession of unlawful firearm and 3 years for unlawful possession of ammunition.

The sentencing of the accused came after they shot and killed 57 year old Mr Van Heerden and raped his 63 year old wife during a house robbery on 29 January 2017 in Waterfall Village in Rustenburg. They were traced and arrested in Matebeleng informal settlement in March 2017.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General, Baile Motswenyane welcomed the sentence and applauded the Rustenburg Trio Task Team and further reiterated that the sentence will send a clear message to other criminals that crime does not pay.
