On Thursday, 1 October 2020, Klerksdorp police arrested a 32-year-old man in an open field in Adamayview for the alleged murder of his younger brother.

It is alleged that the two brothers had an argument at about 11:40 at their place in Meiringspark. The eldest brother allegedly took his 52-year-old father’s firearm and shot his brother aged 27, several times all over the body.

Separate charges under the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000): failure to lock away a firearm in a prescribed safe and failure to keep keys to such safe in safe custody are being investigated.

The motive of the incident is yet to be determined and the suspect is expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 5 October 2020, on a charge of murder.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, congratulated the members for their speedy response in arresting the suspect. He furthermore reminded that the Firearm Amnesty period, which began on 1 August 2020 until 31 January 2021, provides for the surrendering of illegal/unwanted firearms, ammunition and/or firearm parts by persons and institutions during the amnesty.
