The capital of the North West is the dirtiest city in the country, so said, Hannes Schutte, FF Plus MP in the Northwest legislature after the legislature’s public accounts committee met with the auditor-general with the Mafikeng Local Municipality’s city council.

During the meeting, the auditor-general submitted pictures that included how sewage spills in various places in the city and even into the Molopo River.

Some of the photographs also contain images of raw sewage that has flowed near a school since February 2017 and constitutes a severe health risk for the most vulnerable members of the community, namely children.

Rubbish is dumped on public sites, which is being burnt, eaten by animals, it stinks and pollutes the atmosphere, and is almost everywhere.

According to Schutte, litter and sewage are not the only problems encountered by the Mafikeng municipality.

According to the AG’s report, there is no internal control in place for the proper management of the municipality, there is no policy in place for the planning, management, and maintenance of the municipality’s infrastructure, such as sewage systems and water losses and electricity that for months is a problem.

“The city of Mafikeng has been run by the ANC government for 20 years, and they could have done more. Instead, this stinking heap is a testimony of their inability to change, ” said Schutte.
