No to rape.

32-year-old Abel Lekwane was sentenced to life imprisonment on 26 September 2016 by Garankuwa Magistrates’ Court.

The accused raped a 28-year-old woman early last year.

At the time of the incident, the victim was walking with her friend when the accused attacked them. The accused then caught and raped the victim. The incident was reported to the police in Letlhabile where a case was opened.

The accused was also sentenced to six years for kidnapping. Both accused were declared unfit to possess firearms in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000).

The Garankuwa Magistrates Court also sentenced a 47-year- old accused to 20 years imprisonment for kidnapping of a 10 year-old girl in Bethani in 2016.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane commended the Family Violence, Sexual Offences and Child Protection Unit (FCS) in Brits for securing the convictions.

She said that the police will show no mercy to criminals and that the sentences will hopefully serve as a deterrence to potential criminals.
