SAPS Management welcomed another life imprisonment sentence handed down to a 53 year old accused for rape by North West High Court in Mahikeng on 11 August 2017.

It was reported in September 2015 that the minor was on her way to visit her father in Lomanyaneng village when the accused took her to his place where he raped her. The victim and two other girls reported the incident to the former’s mother. The incident was eventually reported to the police and the suspect was traced and arrested.

The accused was sentenced the same day the North Gauteng High Court sitting in Potchefstroom sentenced David Shomolekae to life and 21 years imprisonment for murder, burglary and robbery. Shomolekae strangled Lesley Makousa, and then went to her house where he forced entry into and took household properties in August 2016.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Motswenyane welcomed the sentence and said that it will send a clear message to potential criminals that the police working with other stakeholders will not hesitate to deal sternly with anyone who commits crime including against women and children.
