Lack of police action during the blockade of the N12 - FF Plus demands answers

In a written parliamentary question to the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, the FF Plus is demanding answers about the police’s failure to take action against truck drivers who were blocking the N12 near Bloemhof in the North West this past week.

Their unlawful conduct caused great disruption and serious damage to the Bloemhof .

Farmers and business owners were prevented from delivering their goods and services, and are still busy calculating the true extent to their losses, which amount to millions.

The unlawful protest action continued despite the fact that the FF Plus and other interest groups informed the provincial police authorities in time and requested them to take pro-active steps to prevent the blockade of the main route.

The police merely deployed the Public Order Policing Units to monitor the situation, but otherwise, no attempts were made to enforce the law.

It is an utter shame that the government is allowing the people of South Africa to be held hostage by the lawless acts of those who put their own interests first.

This incident amounts to economic sabotage in the most serious sense, during a time when the country can least afford it.

The government’s law-enforcement agencies’ laxity is undermining the rule of law and could send the country on a downward spiral to anarchy.

All South Africans are entitled to an orderly and safe living and working environment, and protection by the authorities through consistent law enforcement.

It seems, however, that the ANC government is enforcing the law selectively, and putting its own political interests before those of the people.

The FF Plus will continue to apply pressure for law and order to be restored in the country, and to hold the ANC government accountable.

The people of South Africa deserve better than the ANC government.
