NORTH WEST — Law enforcement authorities in the province have launched a dual investigation into a horrific Kanana murder-suicide that claimed the lives of an 8-year-old girl and her 23-year-old uncle. The incident occurred on Monday, 15 June 2026, near Orkney, and is being handled as a murder case coupled with an inquest after the man allegedly stabbed his young niece before taking his own life.

Detectives have not yet established a motive for the attack, and investigations remain active as officers work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, issued a statement expressing profound shock and sorrow over the double fatality. Highlighting the devastating timing of the event—occurring just one day prior to Youth Day—Major General Naidoo noted that the incident serves as a grim reminder of how violence within homes and communities continues to rob innocent individuals of their lives. He firmly stated that no child should ever be subjected to violence, particularly at the hands of a relative.

Addressing the broader issue of gender-based violence (GBV) and domestic abuse, the police leadership is urging the public to maintain heightened vigilance. Major General Naidoo appealed to families and communities to proactively seek professional assistance whenever early warning signs of emotional distress, household conflict, or abuse are detected. He emphasized that eradicating this societal crisis demands a unified, collective response across all sectors of society.
