VENTERSDORP, NORTH WEST – The future of the JB Marks Local Municipality hangs in the balance as a high-stakes JB Marks Municipality demarcation battle unfolds. The Democratic Alliance is actively seeking to reverse the 2015 merger of the former Tlokwe and Ventersdorp municipalities, directly challenging the Municipal Demarcation Board’s decision to maintain the current boundaries just as voter registration concludes for the upcoming local government elections.

The ongoing legal dispute has cast a shadow over the region, raising critical questions about whether the boundary conflict is a primary concern for locals and how it might influence voting patterns at the polls.

For residents in Ventersdorp, the amalgamation has been a source of deep frustration. Community members and local committee representatives have repeatedly voiced their dissatisfaction with the 2015 integration, citing severe and ongoing service delivery disruptions.

According to residents, the consequences of the merger have been dire over the years, with water supply emerging as a particularly thorny issue. Members of the Ventersdorp community committee argue that the merger simply does not work for them, pointing to persistent poor service delivery as a primary failure of the current municipal structure.

With the local government elections looming, this frustration has translated into voter apathy, with some residents expressing a lack of eagerness to participate in the democratic process.

In response to the mounting criticism, a spokesperson for the JB Marks Local Municipality defended the council’s record, insisting that the municipality has ensured consistent service delivery for Ventersdorp residents since the amalgamation of the former Ventersdorp and Tlokwe local municipalities.

The municipal spokesperson highlighted significant financial interventions, noting that the JB Marks Local Municipality successfully settled a substantial Eskom debt, along with other outstanding liabilities inherited from the former Ventersdorp local municipality.

“Based on the financial interventions we have made, there is a constant provision of services in Ventersdorp, despite the challenges that we have already identified,” the municipality spokesperson stated, defending their operational record.

The legal fight over the municipal boundaries is set to continue, with the matter scheduled to be heard in court on August 28, 2026. Until a final ruling is made, the political and administrative future of the region remains uncertain.
