In a bid to build safer communities and the fight against illegal proliferation of firearms, the police in Letlhabile, near Brits, conducted an intelligence driven operation in the early hours of Thursday, 19 April 2018 in Letlhabile and Maboloka.
During the operation two suspects were arrested, after a firearm and ammunition were found in their possession.
In the first arrest a 28 year old suspect was found in possession of one magazine and 7 rounds of ammunition.
The operation then moved to a house in Doornkop Maboloka that was searched and an unlicensed firearm and two rounds of ammunition was found. Another suspect, 27 years old, was arrested after failing to account for the possession.
Both suspects will appear before the Brits Magistrate’s court on Monday, 23 April 2018.
In an unrelated separate incident on Friday, 20 April 2018, police in Mmabatho, with the assistance of community members arrested a 25 year old suspect for illegal possession of firearm in Mogogoe Tlhabologo village. Upon searching the premises, the police found a firearm. The suspect was then arrested and he is expected to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 23 April 2018.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, commended the police and members of the community for their cooperation that resulted in the arrest and confiscation of firearms that are used to commit serious and life threatening crimes. She urged licensed firearm owners to ensure that they comply with the Firearms Control Act to safeguard their firearms
