The police in North West have recovered illegal firearms and arrested three men in Majakaneng near Brits, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said on Wednesday.

“First to be nabbed for common robbery earlier on Monday, 31 October 2016, is a 40-year-old suspect. He was allegedly found in possession of a 9mm pistol and live ammunition,” said Mokgwabone.

“Upon investigation, the suspect led the police to a house at Nkandla Section in Majakaneng village, where a hunting rifle, shot gun, air rifle, and ammunition were found inside.

“That resulted in the arrest of the second suspect, aged 29 who was also found in possession of a two-way communication radio belonging to community watch group.”

The arrested 29-year-old suspect led police to the third suspect, 31.

“Further probe linked the suspects to house robbery cases in the area while one of them was also linked to a house robbery committed in Rustenburg last year,” said Mokgwabone.

“At this stage, the police cannot rule out possibility of linking suspects to other criminal activities including house robberies and car-hijackings that were reported in the vicinity of Brits. Investigation into the matter continues.”

North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Motswenyane said the arrest and recovery of the firearms and ammunition, would hopefully lead to solving of crimes recently reported in the Brits Cluster.

The three were expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of common robbery, house robbery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
