A 22 year old carjacking accused, Thapelo Kekana, is expected to reappear in the Lehurutshe Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 August 2019 for a formal bail application.

Kekana was remanded in custody upon a brief appearance in court, following his arrest for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle on Sunday, 11 August 2019, in Ficksburg, Free State. Preliminary investigation that was conducted after the arrest, linked the accused with carjacking that was allegedly committed in Lehurutshe, outside Zeerust.

It is alleged that the complainant had just stopped his vehicle, a Mitsubishi Canter, in front of the gate at his workplace at approximately 19:40 on Wednesday, 31 July 2019, when two of three unknown men pointed him with firearms. The suspects then allegedly got inside the vehicle and one of them drove off from the scene with the complainant inside. It was on the Lichtenburg-Zeerust road when the suspects allegedly got a phone call and seemingly instructed them to drive back to Dinokana.

It was at that point that the suspects allegedly pushed the complainant out of the vehicle and instructed him to run into the bushes before driving off with his personal belongings such as a cell phone, bank card, driver’s licence and Identity Document.

However, the complainant managed to walk back to the road and saw the Ottoshoop Police Station directional sign board. He went to the police station. He was immediately taken to Lehurutshe where a carjacking case was registered.

Investigation into the matter including tracing of the remaining suspects, is still underway.
