A high school building was burnt down in Ledig outside Rustenburg in North West on Friday, the Moses Kotane local municipality said.
“A mobile classroom for technology, with books, profiles, and learners files, was completely burnt. Furniture for Grade 10 and 12 classes, the head of department [HOD] office, and staff room were partly burnt,” spokeswoman Beauty Makganye said.
The fire at Itumeleng Secondary School was noticed at about 4am on Friday. Moses Kotane municipality speaker Ralesole Diale called on the community of Ledig to protect schools and community property.
Diale visited the school to meet school management and see the extent of the damage.
Deputy principal Itumeleng Sethwala said he received a call at 4am from the chairperson of school governing body informing him that the school was burning. Pupils were excused classes for safety reasons. The cause of the fire was not yet known.
