Graphic video circulating of girls being sexually assaulted

Potchefstroom: This warning follows the circulation of a graphic video picked up on social media wherein two girls appears to be sexually assaulted. The police in this province would like to urge members of the public to stop distributing the said video as it is harmful to the investigation and also jeopardising the legal processes.

The suspects in this case, aged 18 and 19 were arrested on Friday, 12 October 2018 for alleged sexual assault and assault common after the incident was reported at Phokeng police station. They were granted R500,00 bail each upon appearance before the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 October 2018. They will appear before the same court again on Thursday, 15 November 2018. Charges in terms Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No. 32 of 2007) are also being investigated.

The police, Community Police Forum (CPF) members and an official from Rustenburg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit visited the school where the suspects are attending in Luka village on Thursday, 18 October 2018 to address learners about sexual abuse and many other issues including the distribution of pornographic material.

Investigation into the matter continues. Members of the community are advised to use social media platforms responsibly and to apply the following tips:

* Do not share the information that is not supposed to be shared or not for public consumption.
* Post messages or statuses that will make positive impact.
* Report or block content that affects yourself and others.
